Donald Trump is halting US funding to the World Health
Organisation (WHO) over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
The America president said his government has deep concerns
as to whether US funding has been put to the best possible use by the WHO.
During a press conference at the White House, Trump said the
organisation had 'failed in its basic duty and it must be held accountable'.
He accused WHO of promoting China's 'disinformation' about
the virus, saying this likely led to a wider outbreak of the virus than
otherwise would have occurred.
The president added it wasn't fair for America to contribute
roughly £300m to £400m ($400m to $500m) to the WHO when China had given around
£33m [$42million].
It comes after the US death toll reached 25,786 with 10,834
of these in New York.
The deferral of payments is pending a review of the US
government's warnings about the coronavirus and China.
Trump said the outbreak would have been better contained in
China and spared lives if the UN health agency had done a better job
investigating reports coming out of China.
