Google Doodle of Marsha P. Johnson, Beloved Trans-Rights Activist, Will Close Out Pride Month

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

Google is paying tribute to Marsha P. Johnson -- a pioneering figure in the country's LGBT rights movement -- on the last day of Pride month.

The company announced its June 30 Google Doodle will be dedicated to the late activist who was at the center of New York's gay liberation movement for more than 20 years.

The company said it chose June 30th to honor Johnson as it will be the first anniversary since she was posthumously honored as a grand marshal during WorldPride in New York.

"Thank you, Marsha P. Johnson, for inspiring people everywhere to stand up for the freedom to be themselves," Google wrote.

Google.org will also donate $500,000 to the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, the company said. The institute, which launched last year, will continue the work Johnson started, advocating for and organizing on behalf of the transgender community, its founder has previously told CNN.

"For so long, Marsha's history has only been heralded by the LGBTQ community," Elle Hearns, the founder and executive director of the institute, said in a statement.

"Today's Doodle will help teach her story to many more around the world, and about the work that has been historically ignored and often purposely left out of history books. Today's Doodle of Marsha reminds people that Black and LGBTQ+ history is bigger than just a month; it is something to be honored every single day."

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a firework was thrown at the Liver Building as thousands of Liverpool fans celebrated their club’s Premier League win in the city.

Merseyside police said the man – a 19-year-old from Scarisbrick in Lancashire – was being questioned about the incident.

A fire that started when the firework landed on a balcony caused damage worth £10,000 to the building as fans gathered in the city centre on Friday.

A 26-year-old man had also been charged with grievous bodily harm following a serious assault on a man in the crowd, the force said.

Officers were subject to “violent confrontations” and 15 other people were arrested for offences of public order, affray and being drunk and disorderly as several thousand supporters gathered at the city’s Pier Head for a second night of celebrations after Liverpool won the Premier League for the first time in 30 years.

Robert Jenrick Inder Pressure to Resign After Donor-Row Documents Released

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

The housing secretary, Robert Jenrick, is under pressure to resign after newly released documents indicated that he “insisted” a planning decision for a £1bn property development should be rushed through so a Tory donor’s company could reduce costs by £45m.

In one document, a civil servant in the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government wrote that the secretary of state (SoS) wanted the Westferry development in east London to be signed off the following day so that Richard Desmond’s company would avoid the community infrastructure levy (CIL).

“On timing, my understanding is that SoS is/was insistent that decision issued this week ie tomorrow – as next week the viability of the scheme is impacted by a change in the London CIL regime,” the official wrote.

Text message exchanges reveal how Desmond, the former Express titles newspaper owner and pornographer, lobbied Jenrick to expedite the development to avoid the need to pay an extra £45m to Labour-run Tower Hamlets council, the poorest borough in London, saying: “We don’t want to give Marxists loads of doe [sic] for nothing!”

Jenrick subsequently overturned a decision by the council and the government’s planning inspectorate in order to approve a 500-apartment, 44-storey development at Westferry Printworks, a former printing plant in east London.

The documents were released on Wednesday after Jenrick faced a debate and vote, and was accused by critics of potentially breaking the ministerial code. The code instructs all ministers to “declare and resolve any interests and relationships” and “take decisions impartially, fairly and on merit, using the best evidence and without discrimination or bias”.

7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Mexico, Kills at Least 4

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

The 7.5-magnitude quake, centered on the Pacific Coast in the state of Oaxaca, damaged some structures and caused buildings to sway in Mexico City.

The powerful quake, centered near the Pacific Coast in Oaxaca, was felt hundreds of miles away.

A strong earthquake shook southern Mexico on Tuesday, killing at least four people, causing buildings to shake hundreds of miles away and prompting residents to flee homes and offices to seek safety on the streets under open sky.

The earthquake’s magnitude was 7.5, according to Mexico’s national seismological service, and it was centered in the Pacific Ocean, about 14 miles off the coast, south of Crucecita, a beach town in the southern state of Oaxaca that has been popular with tourists. It struck at 10:29 a.m. local time.

The U.S. Geological Survey, however, estimated the magnitude at 7.4; it is not unusual for preliminary measurements to vary.

Another quake, estimated by the U.S.G.S. at 4.9 magnitude, struck the same region Monday night. By early afternoon on Tuesday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said, there had been 147 aftershocks to the larger quake, and officials warned that more were expected.

At least four people died, but early reports indicated that damage was not extensive.
Four people have been confirmed killed in the earthquake, according to the governor of Oaxaca, Alejandro Murat, and David León, Mexico’s national coordinator of civil protection.

Michael Keaton in Talks to Return as Batman

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

Michael Keaton is in talks to return to the DC universe as Batman.

According to The Wrap, the Oscar-nominated actor is in the early stages of conversations with DC over reprising the role he last played in 1992’s Batman Returns. The Birdman star would appear in The Flash, a solo outing for Ezra Miller’s character who was introduced in Batman v Superman before also starring in Justice League. It’s not yet clear how big or small the role would be.

The Flash is set to be directed by It film-maker Andy Muschietti after Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa left the project in 2016. The plot will allegedly ignore the two Joel Schumacher Batman films and continue on after Batman Returns. It’s based on 2011 comic Flashpoint which sees The Flash travel back in time to save his mother.

After Ben Affleck retired from playing the caped crusader, Robert Pattinson will officially take on the role in The Batman, a noirish take on the character from Cloverfield director Matt Reeves.

The news comes just weeks after Zack Snyder announced that he is working on a longer cut of Justice League to premiere on HBO Max while Henry Cavill may return as Superman in sequels to Aquaman and Shazam. The next dated DC film is Wonder Woman 1984 which is set to be released in October.

Daisy Nook And Carrington Illegal Raves: 'Mistakes Made', Mayor Says

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

Police and local authorities made mistakes in the handling of two illegal raves where a man died and a woman was raped, a mayor has said.

About 6,000 revellers descended on the village of Carrington and Daisy Nook Country Park on Saturday.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham admitted intelligence gathering on both events "could have been done better".

Police were criticised for allowing them to happen, but said they were "near impossible" to stop once started.

A 20-year-old man died of a suspected drug overdose at the Daisy Nook rave in Failsworth while a woman was raped and three people stabbed in Carrington.

Both events late on Saturday were illegal under coronavirus restrictions but Greater Manchester Police restricted its involvement to what they called "careful monitoring".

Speaking at an online news conference with Assistant Chief Constable Nick Bailey, Mr Burnham said the force was ready to take every step necessary to stop other illegal raves and that officers would not turn a blind eye in the future.

Coronavirus: Thousands of Homeless Still in Temporary Shelter

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

Thousands of homeless people put up in places like hotels and B&Bs due to coronavirus are still in emergency accommodation.

Charities say there are just weeks to stop them returning to the streets as premises prepare to reopen.

BBC research found three quarters of homeless people in 17 areas are still in temporary accommodation with some already sleeping rough again.

The government said councils must continue to provide safe accommodation.

The BBC's The Next Episode podcast contacted the 25 councils with the highest rough sleeper counts last autumn.

Seventeen of those councils provided comparable data and between them they housed 3,258 homeless people under the Everyone In scheme.

Most of the homeless people were still in that temporary accommodation as of last week but 80 were already back on the streets.

With hotels set to reopen to the public from 4 July, charities say a plan is needed to move thousands of homeless people into alternative accommodation.

Inexpensive Steroid Dexamethasone is The First Drug to Reduce Deaths From Covid-19

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

An inexpensive steroid reduced deaths from coronavirus infection, helping some of the sickest patients with severe lung damage survive the illness, according to British clinical trial results announced Tuesday in a news release.

The 60-year-old drug, dexamethasone, is the first medication shown to increase people’s chances of surviving covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. It reduced the risk of death for patients on ventilators by a third and cut the risk of death for patients on oxygen by a fifth, heartening news that drew widespread interest and hope.

British regulators speedily approved the drug for use in hospitalized patients requiring oxygen, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson trumpeted the results, declaring there was “genuine cause to celebrate a remarkable British scientific achievement and the benefits it will bring not just in this country but around the world.”

Dexamethasone is a workhorse steroid typically used to treat inflammation, including flare-ups of rheumatoid arthritis, and was given as a tablet, liquid or as an intravenous preparation in the trial. Some other steroids are also being tested against covid-19.

Outside physicians tempered their optimism about the news with urgent calls to release details of researchers’ findings so doctors could pore over the data and understand the benefits and limitations of the drug.

Munira Mirza: PM's 'Nonsense Detector' Who Has Attacked Racism Claims

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

When Boris Johnson was asked by Grazia magazine earlier this year which five women had most inspired him, one of those he cited – alongside Boudicca, Malala Yousafzai, Kate Bush and his own grandmother – was Munira Mirza.

While she doesn’t have the public profile of the iconoclastic Dominic Cummings, Mirza is an integral part of Johnson’s Downing Street operation, as head of the No 10 policy unit.

He said she was “capable of being hip, cool, groovy and generally on trend” – but also that she was a “powerful nonsense detector” who would help him deliver on his agenda in government.

One of the things she regards as nonsense – judging by her output as a commentator over the years – is the claim that the challenges faced by black and minority ethnic people in the UK result from structural racism.

In 2018, she accused the then universities minister, Sam Gyimah, of “a cynical game of hot potato” after he criticised Oxbridge for failing to admit more black students rather than investigating the deeper causes of the disparity.

And she repeatedly criticised the Labour MP David Lammy’s report on the justice system, which was commissioned by Theresa May. Framing the issue in terms of institutional racism “only clouds the reality of what is happening and in the end could lead to worse outcomes for ethnic minorities”, Mirza claimed in an article for the contrarian website Spiked.

Sushant Singh Rajput, Bollywood Star, Dies Aged 34

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

Popular Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence on Sunday, police and Indian media reports have said.

Initial reports, citing police sources, said the 34-year-old’s body was found in his apartment in suburban Bandra.

Mumbai police spokesperson Pranaya Ashok confirmed the death and said details were being investigated. There are no suspicious circumstances, said police, who believe he took his own life.

Rajput, who started his career acting on television, made his Bollywood debut in 2013 with director Abhishek Kapoor in Kai Po Che, based on the book by Chetan Bhagat.

His family said in a statement, “it pains us to share that Sushant Singh Rajput is no longer with us”.

“We request his fans to keep him in their thoughts and celebrate his life and his work like they have done so far.”

Social media was flooded with condolences for the actor, with many reacting to the news with disbelief.

“Sushant Singh Rajput...a bright young actor gone too soon,” Indian prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

“He excelled on TV and in films. His rise in the world of entertainment inspired many and he leaves behind several memorable performances. Shocked by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Sir Robert Peel Statue Removal Calls 'Targeting Wrong Man'

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

Anti-racism campaigners calling for the removal of statues of a former British prime minister have been accused of targeting the wrong man.

There are several statues of Sir Robert Peel, who founded the modern police.

But city leaders said people appeared to be confusing him with his father, of the same name, who opposed the abolition of slavery.

Despite acknowledging the mistaken identity, campaigners are still calling for the Leeds statue to go.

Statues of the 18th Century prime minister - located in Leeds, Bury, Manchester, Preston and Glasgow - have been included on a list of possible targets following the toppling of the monument to Edward Colston in Bristol.

Sir Robert's father had been a vocal opponent of the abolition of slavery because it threatened his fortune in the cotton trade.

Responding to call for the Leeds statue to be taken down, council leader Judith Blake said: "There seems to be now a recognition that there has been some misunderstanding about the Robert Peel whose statue is in Leeds and that it was actually his father who worked in the cotton trade. "

Cecil Rhodes Statue: 'Bit of Hypocrisy' in Removal Calls

RAHUL SHARMA DEBT CONNECT IN MANCHESTER, UK,

The chancellor of Oxford University says there is a "bit of hypocrisy" over the calls for a statue of British imperialist Cecil Rhodes to be removed.

Lord Patten said there should be "an argument about far more fundamental issues which touch on Black Lives Matter" such as education and health.

Thousands peacefully protested to remove the statue on Tuesday as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.

City councillor Shaista Aziz said Lord Patten's response was "tone deaf".

Campaigners have said Rhodes, a 19th Century businessman and politician in southern Africa, represented white supremacy and is steeped in colonialism and racism.

Crowds chanted "take it down" outside Oriel College in High Street during the protest organised by the "Rhodes Must Fall" campaign.
