Daisy Nook And Carrington Illegal Raves: 'Mistakes Made', Mayor Says

Police and local authorities made mistakes in the handling of two illegal raves where a man died and a woman was raped, a mayor has said.

About 6,000 revellers descended on the village of Carrington and Daisy Nook Country Park on Saturday.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham admitted intelligence gathering on both events "could have been done better".

Police were criticised for allowing them to happen, but said they were "near impossible" to stop once started.

A 20-year-old man died of a suspected drug overdose at the Daisy Nook rave in Failsworth while a woman was raped and three people stabbed in Carrington.

Both events late on Saturday were illegal under coronavirus restrictions but Greater Manchester Police restricted its involvement to what they called "careful monitoring".

Speaking at an online news conference with Assistant Chief Constable Nick Bailey, Mr Burnham said the force was ready to take every step necessary to stop other illegal raves and that officers would not turn a blind eye in the future.

Coronavirus: Thousands of Homeless Still in Temporary Shelter

Thousands of homeless people put up in places like hotels and B&Bs due to coronavirus are still in emergency accommodation.

Charities say there are just weeks to stop them returning to the streets as premises prepare to reopen.

BBC research found three quarters of homeless people in 17 areas are still in temporary accommodation with some already sleeping rough again.

The government said councils must continue to provide safe accommodation.

The BBC's The Next Episode podcast contacted the 25 councils with the highest rough sleeper counts last autumn.

Seventeen of those councils provided comparable data and between them they housed 3,258 homeless people under the Everyone In scheme.

Most of the homeless people were still in that temporary accommodation as of last week but 80 were already back on the streets.

With hotels set to reopen to the public from 4 July, charities say a plan is needed to move thousands of homeless people into alternative accommodation.

Munira Mirza: PM's 'Nonsense Detector' Who Has Attacked Racism Claims

When Boris Johnson was asked by Grazia magazine earlier this year which five women had most inspired him, one of those he cited – alongside Boudicca, Malala Yousafzai, Kate Bush and his own grandmother – was Munira Mirza.

While she doesn’t have the public profile of the iconoclastic Dominic Cummings, Mirza is an integral part of Johnson’s Downing Street operation, as head of the No 10 policy unit.

He said she was “capable of being hip, cool, groovy and generally on trend” – but also that she was a “powerful nonsense detector” who would help him deliver on his agenda in government.

One of the things she regards as nonsense – judging by her output as a commentator over the years – is the claim that the challenges faced by black and minority ethnic people in the UK result from structural racism.

In 2018, she accused the then universities minister, Sam Gyimah, of “a cynical game of hot potato” after he criticised Oxbridge for failing to admit more black students rather than investigating the deeper causes of the disparity.

And she repeatedly criticised the Labour MP David Lammy’s report on the justice system, which was commissioned by Theresa May. Framing the issue in terms of institutional racism “only clouds the reality of what is happening and in the end could lead to worse outcomes for ethnic minorities”, Mirza claimed in an article for the contrarian website Spiked.

Sushant Singh Rajput, Bollywood Star, Dies Aged 34

Popular Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence on Sunday, police and Indian media reports have said.

Initial reports, citing police sources, said the 34-year-old’s body was found in his apartment in suburban Bandra.

Mumbai police spokesperson Pranaya Ashok confirmed the death and said details were being investigated. There are no suspicious circumstances, said police, who believe he took his own life.

Rajput, who started his career acting on television, made his Bollywood debut in 2013 with director Abhishek Kapoor in Kai Po Che, based on the book by Chetan Bhagat.

His family said in a statement, “it pains us to share that Sushant Singh Rajput is no longer with us”.

“We request his fans to keep him in their thoughts and celebrate his life and his work like they have done so far.”

Social media was flooded with condolences for the actor, with many reacting to the news with disbelief.

“Sushant Singh Rajput...a bright young actor gone too soon,” Indian prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

“He excelled on TV and in films. His rise in the world of entertainment inspired many and he leaves behind several memorable performances. Shocked by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and fans. Om Shanti.”

Sir Robert Peel Statue Removal Calls 'Targeting Wrong Man'

Anti-racism campaigners calling for the removal of statues of a former British prime minister have been accused of targeting the wrong man.

There are several statues of Sir Robert Peel, who founded the modern police.

But city leaders said people appeared to be confusing him with his father, of the same name, who opposed the abolition of slavery.

Despite acknowledging the mistaken identity, campaigners are still calling for the Leeds statue to go.

Statues of the 18th Century prime minister - located in Leeds, Bury, Manchester, Preston and Glasgow - have been included on a list of possible targets following the toppling of the monument to Edward Colston in Bristol.

Sir Robert's father had been a vocal opponent of the abolition of slavery because it threatened his fortune in the cotton trade.

Responding to call for the Leeds statue to be taken down, council leader Judith Blake said: "There seems to be now a recognition that there has been some misunderstanding about the Robert Peel whose statue is in Leeds and that it was actually his father who worked in the cotton trade. "

Cecil Rhodes Statue: 'Bit of Hypocrisy' in Removal Calls

The chancellor of Oxford University says there is a "bit of hypocrisy" over the calls for a statue of British imperialist Cecil Rhodes to be removed.

Lord Patten said there should be "an argument about far more fundamental issues which touch on Black Lives Matter" such as education and health.

Thousands peacefully protested to remove the statue on Tuesday as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.

City councillor Shaista Aziz said Lord Patten's response was "tone deaf".

Campaigners have said Rhodes, a 19th Century businessman and politician in southern Africa, represented white supremacy and is steeped in colonialism and racism.

Crowds chanted "take it down" outside Oriel College in High Street during the protest organised by the "Rhodes Must Fall" campaign.

Dana White Reveals UFC Fight Island Will Be On Yas Island In Abu Dhabi

UFC has announced that its much-hyped Fight Island will now have a proper location in the United Arab Emirates. While UFC President Dana White did not purchase an island to host his championships as he had been hinting, he will use Yas Island in Abu Dhabi for four events, starting with UFC 251 on pay-per-view on July 11. The next three fight cards will be July 15, July 18, and July 25.

UFC indicated that a 10-square mile safety zone will be established on Yas Island. It will include an arena, hotel, training facilities, and dining establishments that will be open only to UFC athletes and their coaches, UFC staff and event personnel and island employees necessary to operate the facilities. The island location will help international athletes who have a difficult time entering the United States because of Coronavirus pandemic travel restrictions.

Yas Island is an enormous entertainment destination only 30 minutes from the UAE capital and has been renowned as the home of the Yas Marina Circuit which holds its annual Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The center of the island holds the popular W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island Hotel, which surrounds the F1 race track as well as hovering over land and water. Adjacent to the hotel is the Yas Marina which has quickly become the destination for many of the world’s largest superyachts. Among the high-end restaurants in the marina is the iconic Cipriani featuring dishes from Harry’s Bar in Venice.

Pubs Call For Clarity Over Plans to Reopen English Beer Gardens

Pubs have urged the government to clarify “half-baked” plans to reopen beer gardens, amid confusion over whether some will be permitted to serve drinks before the end of the month.

A group of cabinet ministers nicknamed the “Save Summer Six” are reportedly considering proposals to allow beer gardens in England to host drinkers from as early as 22 June as part of an effort to avert 3.5m job losses in the struggling hospitality sector.

But publicans, brewers and the pub industry trade body said many would struggle to be ready in under three weeks and called for certainty about the government’s timetable.

“We’ve always wanted to reopen our nation’s pubs safely and viably as soon as possible, but we urgently need a clear decision on whether we can reopen pub beer gardens early,” said Emma McClarkin, the chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA).

The trade body, which represents the UK’s largest pub-owning companies, has previously warned that 40% of the UK’s 47,000 pubs could shut for good due to lockdown restrictions.

It wants the government to allow all pubs to open from 4 July, the date the government initially put forward as the earliest possible opportunity, and it has also said the 27,000 UK pubs with outdoor space should be the first to be allowed to open their doors.

Timo Werner: Chelsea’s $138.5 Million Investment In A Better Future

It is not a done deal yet. But everything points towards RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner joining London-based Chelsea at the end of the 2019/20 season. According to a report by Transfermarkt and Bild, the Blues are willing to trigger the €60 million exit-clause in the 24-year-old's contract at RB Leipzig and bearing in mind a last-minute intervention by Liverpool will sign Werner.

The Germany international has long been linked with a move to Liverpool by German media giant Bild. But although Liverpool was interested and had reportedly met with Werner's agent Karlheinz Förster, reports of a done deal were exaggerated. Indeed, the Reds were interested; manager Jürgen Klopp even spoke with Werner via telephone over Easter.

Werner often spoke highly of Klopp and said in public that he could see himself join Liverpool. At the same time, there were two significant obstacles for Liverpool to overcome to make the signing happen. Werner wanted guaranteed playing time, impossible given LFC's squad depth, and a substantial personal financial package.

Those two problems could have maybe been overcome had it not been for COVID-19. The lack of sports has been a significant blow for the Fenway Sports Group, which owns both the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool. FSG's assets are entirely tied up in the sports and entertainment business, which has taken a significant hit during the pandemic.

'Your Lives Matter': Obama Offers Words of Hope in Contrast to Trump's Division

Barack Obama has told young people of colour “your lives matter” in public remarks that supporters welcomed as an antidote to Donald Trump’s racially-charged and divisive threats to crack down on civil dissent.

America’s first black president on Tuesday expressed faith in young people in the US and said he remains “optimistic” about the future despite the police killing of George Floyd and mounting crises that Trump’s critics say leave the country crying out for leadership.

Obama spoke at an event of My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation that was called “Reimagining Policing in the Wake of Continued Police Violence.” It was the first public appearance by the 44th president since Floyd was killed by a white Minneapolis police officer kneeling on his neck, sparking nine days of nationwide protests that have been mostly peaceful but marred by some incidents of violence.

In striking contrast to the White House incumbent, whose expressions of sympathy for Floyd have been overshadowed by harsh warnings that the US military could be deployed to impose law and order, Obama at one point spoke directly to young men and women of color.

“I want you to know that you matter, I want you to know that your lives matter, that your dreams matter, and when I go home and I look at the faces of my daughters, Sasha and Malia, and I look at my nephews and nieces, I see limitless potential that deserves to flourish and thrive,” Obama said in a virtual town for the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance.

George Floyd Death: Spike Lee Says Protesters Were 'Not Just Born Angry'

Film-maker Spike Lee has said people in the US are angry because they "live every day in this world where the system is not set up for you to win".

The Oscar-winner said the reasons for the current unrest included the deaths of black people like George Floyd but also wider injustices and inequalities.

"It's not like you're just born angry," he told BBC arts editor Will Gompertz.

Lee also said President Trump's response showed that "he's a gangster, he's trying to be a dictator".

Mr Trump has threatened to send in the military to quell growing civil unrest across the US.

On Monday, the president walked from the White House to a nearby fire-damaged church to pose with a Bible, after demonstrators were cleared from his path.

Who Was David McAtee and How Did He Die?

CHEF David McAtee - the popular owner of a Kentucky barbecue spot who fed cops "for free" - was fatally shot by security forces during protests over the death of a medic.

His grieving mother, Odessa Riley, described him as a "community pillar and a good person".

Who was David McAtee?

David McAtee, 53, was the owner of a barbecue spot, YaYa's BBQ, in western Louisville, Kentucky.

Dubbed 'the BBQ Man', he was known for offering free meals to cops, according to pals and family after his death.

The chef was gunned down while police and National Guard soldiers were enforcing a curfew early on June 1 during protests over a previous fatal shooting by cops in Kentucky’s largest city.

McAtee's mother, Odessa Riley, told the Courier Journal: "He left a great legend behind. He was a good person. Everybody around him would say that.

"My son didn't hurt nobody. He didn't do nothing to nobody."

Christopher 2X, an anti-violence activist and executive director of the group Game Changers, said McAtee was well-liked.

“I’ve never known him to be aggressive in any kind of way,” he added.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said on June 1: "David was a friend to many, [a] well known, barbecue man.

"[He] had nurtured so many people in their bellies, in their hearts before, and for him to be caught up in this and for him not to be with us today is a tragedy that is just hard to put into words."

Tim Rooke shared some memories of working with the late Princess Diana — he even noted that she had a subtle way of getting the perfect photograph.

Royal photographer, Tim Rooke, has warmed the hearts of many royal fans with the memories he shared about working with Princess Diana.

While speaking exclusively to Us Weekly, the talented photographer said the late Princess of Wales was a “warm person” who was easy to capture on camera.

Tim even went on to reveal that the Princess of Wales had a unique way of making picture moments, a perfect one – regardless of the occasion.

According to Tim, the late 36-year-old would often turn “before she went into the building, so she’d just look at you at the last second, and it always produced great pictures.”

Since she passed away in 1997, her sons, Prince Harry and Prince William; their wives, Meghan Meghan and Kate Middleton, have continued to honor and pay tribute to Diana’s memory.

Us Weekly reported that during the 2017 HBO documentary “Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy,” William and Harry shared memories of their mother.

Elon Musk Reaches First Tesla Compensation Award Worth Nearly $800 Million

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has unlocked the first of 12 possible stock option awards from the massive compensation plan he signed in 2018, and it’s worth nearly $800 million. The company disclosed on Thursday that Musk now has the option to buy 1.69 million of its shares because Tesla eclipsed $20 billion in total revenue over the last four quarters and a market capitalization of more than $100 billion — the first in a series of tandem milestones Tesla must hit for Musk to realize the full value of the plan.

Tesla’s stock price was $805.81 when the markets closed on Thursday, meaning those shares are worth about $1.36 billion. But Musk only has to pay a $350.02 per share “strike price” to get them, according to the agreement, or a total of about $591 million — meaning he could net around $770 million depending on when he pulls the trigger.

If Tesla’s stock price keeps going up, and the company hits additional revenue goals, Musk could wind up collecting around 20.3 million new shares of Tesla at that strike price, clearing a path for him to collect tens of billions of dollars or more.

Musk does not collect a salary at Tesla, and the company originally categorized the compensation plan — which replaced one from 2012 — as an “at-risk performance award” that “ensures [Musk] will be compensated only if Tesla and all of its shareholders do extraordinarily well.” Musk is worth around $40 billion on paper already, but has downplayed his personal wealth. He repeatedly points out that he reinvests a lot of the money he makes back into his own companies and is relatively cash poor. But he also borrows against his Tesla holdings and puts that money into his companies as well, so the more of the company he owns, the more money he could have access to in the future.

Confirmation of the award was tucked inside Tesla’s annual “proxy filing,” a document that lays out what shareholders should expect at the company’s annual meeting. This year that meeting will take place on July 7th, according to the filing. While many companies have been holding online-only shareholder meetings during the pandemic, Tesla says it will hold an in-person event at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California in addition to a webcast. The company is leaving room for that to change, though.

“[W]e will continue to monitor public health and travel safety protocols required or recommended by federal, state and local governments. If necessary or advisable to protect our personnel and stockholders, we will change the date, time, location and/or format of the 2020 Annual Meeting,” the company writes.

Shehan Madushanka: Sri Lanka Suspend Fast Bowler After Heroin Arrest

Sri Lanka fast bowler Shehan Madushanka has been suspended from all forms of cricket with immediate effect after he was arrested for alleged possession of illegal drugs, the country's cricket board said.

The 25-year-old took a hat-trick in his first one-day international against Bangladesh in Dhaka in January, 2018 and played two more Twenty20 internationals on that tour before being sidelined with injuries.

He was caught with 2.7 grams of heroin by police on Saturday and then remanded in custody until June 2, Sri Lanka police said.

"Sri Lanka Cricket decided to suspend Shehan Madushanka from all forms of cricket, with immediate effect," Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.

"The decision was taken following the player was arrested by the Police and later sent on remand custody for alleged possession of illegal drugs.
